Gateways is a metroidvania platformer with puzzle elements and a side view. Play as a gray-haired scientist in a white coat. The hero can initially only run and jump. If you jump on an enemy's head several times in a row, they will disappear. However, not all enemies are allowed to be destroyed in this way. The protagonist has a life reserve in the form of 3 flasks. If they run out, it will be revived at the nearest checkpoint (where game progress is also saved). There's blood in this project.

Gateways has a partially open world. The map can be explored freely without loading screens. Often, the protagonist will run into temporarily insurmountable obstacles. At such moments, in order to go further, you need to go to other places and find improvements there, which will expand the list of actions of the main character. Energy spheres are scattered throughout the locations. It is an analogue of a currency. Only here it buys not new equipment or upgrades for it, but hints for solving riddles.

The indie project differs from other similar titles in the presence of a variety of opportunities. As you collect power-ups, the researcher will learn how to create portals on almost any surface, summon your own doppelgängers, change your size, travel through time, and walk on walls and ceilings. Most of the puzzles and battles here are based on using these abilities in the correct order. The events themselves take place in a large laboratory.
