Malebolje is the name of the eighth circle of Hell in Dante's famous work "The Divine Comedy". It was this poem that inspired the developer when creating the game. The protagonist is Ser Leopold. He is the lord of the castle, who has made a deal with the devil. Now the man is trying to atone for his own sins and cleanse the fortress of evil spirits. Leopold is forced to fight his way through hordes of enemies of all kinds in order to gain his freedom. Along the way, he meets acquaintances who will help him open his eyes and understand why sire is trapped.

Malebolgia has a day and night cycle. Depending on the time of day, enemies acquire new skills. In the adventure, the main character will meet bosses with unique mechanics. From them, you can get keys to open the passage further and a vestige, which is needed to increase the amount of life and the amount of damage. The project uses souls-like combat. The evil spirits will have to look for weak spots, wait for the right moments to strike, cover themselves with a shield and dodge retaliatory attacks. If the character dies, the enemies in the location will be resurrected, and you will have to go through it again.

The gameplay itself, at the same time, is unhurried and meditative. Leopold wanders for a long time through the narrow long corridors of the castle, avoiding traps and looking for an opportunity to open another door in order to move closer to his goal.
