It is important to note that there is no standard tech tree in the game, and various technologies can be purchased at any point in the game. The action takes place in the Shattered Sectors, a space region rich in minerals in the form of asteroids. The main goal is to colonize these asteroids, extract various types of ore, and sell them to the Federation.
